Allaah says; "A group he has guided, and a group observed to be in error (misguidance); because surely they took shayaatin (devils) as Awliyah (protectors and helpers) instead of Allaah, and think they are guided. (Q7:30)

The death of the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) By now, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had united a larger part of the Arabia than anyone had done before, and the pagan belief had died out as the number of converts to Islam increased everywhere. He led a pilgrimage to the Kabah, that is correct according to the Islamic belief. Three months after returning to Madinah from what was later to be called his Farewell Pilgrimage, he fell ill and died in the month R.Awwal.
ABUBAKR (RA) As the first caliph
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) death took the believers by surprise and created uncertainty about the future. No arrangements had been made for his succession, and it was the first main problem the Muslim community had to face without its leader. Abubakr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)s father- inlaw (through the marriage of Aisha (RA)) and his closest friend, was nominated to lead the prayers. He was two years younger than the Prophet, and was elected the caliph or successor (632-634). However, it was understood that the caliph would succeed only in the role of leadership and that he could in no way claim those powers of Divine Revelation which belonged to the Prophet alone. The caliph relation to the religion would be no more than that of a guardian.
