The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)taught us many Adhkar (words of remembrance) to say when we intend go to sleep. These Adhkar will act as protection for us till we wake up in the morning. Here are some of these sayings;
Surat ul-Ikhlas (Q112) and Muawidhatayn (Q113 and 114).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed that when we go to bed we should cup our palms and blow gently into them and then read Surat ul-Ikhlas (Qul Huwa llahu Ahad) and Muawidhatayn (Qul 'audhu birabil falaq and Qul 'audhu birabi nnas).
After this, we should pass our hands over as much of our body as we can reach, beginning with the head and the face. This should be done three times. (Fath Al-Bari by Al- Asqalani)
Ayat al-Kursiyy (Q2:255)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also told us to read this verse when we lie on our bed. (Bukhari)
The Benefit.
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever reads this when he lies down to sleep will be protected by Allaah from Shaytan until he rises in the morning" (Bukhari)
The Last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah (Q2:285-6)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)told us that
"Whoever recites these two verses at night before sleeping, it will be enough for him.” (Bukhari)
Ablution Too
In addition, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also taught us to perform ablution and lay on our right side and then say this;
“Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilaika, wa fawadtu amri ilaika, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilaika, walja’tu zahri ilaika. Raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la malja’ wa la manja minka illa ilaika, aamantu bikitaabikal ladhi anzalta wa bi Nabiyyikal ladhi arsalta.
The meaning.
“Oh Allaah, I submit myself to you, entrust myself to you, turn my face to You, and lay myself down in dependence upon You, in longing and in dread. There is no refuge, and no escape, except by You. I believe in Your Word revealed by You to the Prophet You sent.”
The benefit
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “whoever says this and dies in his sleep has died in a state of natural innocence (Fitrah)” (Bukhari)
Safety
Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to go to sleep, he would place his right hand under him chin and say; Allahuma qini’adhaabaka yauma tab ‘athu ‘ibaadaka
The Meaning
Oh Allaah, save me from Your punishment on the Day You will resurrect Your slaves. (Saheeh AbuDawud)
