Little But Firm Steps

Ya Munira !.....bla bla bla I watched as the alfas lowered her into the grave reciting along the regulars (prayers): for, the dead.. People around wailed and shed tears clears flowed down my cheeks too. Mama Agege is gone, many would think that my tears were out of grief that my grandma was dead But No, The tears trickled down as her death reminded me of Allaah and the date that we must all keep with our creator someday. As family and sympathizers wailed I was pondering about the thoughts of that day in my heart. I told myself Mama is no more; you will be in such position one day.

But the question you should ask yourself is: Are you ready for that day?" How many of Allaahs laws do you follow? Fine, you believe in Him, observe daily prayers (sometimes you combine two or more); fast during the month of Ramadan give charity and perform some other good acts." As I continued an assessment of myself, something told me, there is more to obeying Allaah than all these. There and then the -issue of hijab came to my mind far the umpteenth time As usual, I tried to push it away from my mind; but that day it just wouldn't go away. " When will you start wearing hijab? I asked myself, use of hijab was an issue I had been pondering over at that period of my life But I could not wear it at that point My immediate excuse was that I had a wig on; at other times, I told myself that putting the hijab will just cover my fresh weave on.

That was the Point in using hijab after spending money besides, I further told myself, The hair would smell if you cover it! I fought the battle within me for some time and came to a conclusion that I had to stop fixing weave-on nor would l wear the wig anymore. Alhamdulillah, it was an holidays, it was a goad time to take little steps. I started by using it in our compound then moved a step further by putting it on whenever I was going out.

Each time, I had a- feeling that the "whole world" was looking at me; which made me feel quite uncomfortable. At a point, I discovered that the rate of "good Samaritan" giving me a ride in-their car reduced. I had no choice but to attribute it to my "strange new look". Well I ignored all these and pushed further. School resumed" for my final semester and I was still with my hijab. My roorm-mates and Christian friends castigated me, must you wear hijab? Don't be a fanatic were some of their comments. I was not moved by all that and my conviction about using it became stronger I began to make my steps by changing the cycle of my friends to muslim sisters and by attending gatherings that improved me spiritually. Alhamdulillah, today, I still wear my hijab. I pray that Allaah make me more conscious of His dos and donts and make me a better Muslim.
