Question: Who is a managing director?
Answer: A managing director is somebody who can be referred to as the father of any work organization.
He is the head of the organization; he is responsible for setting goals or targets and making sure the goals are achieved by coordinating every other of staff so as to achieve this goal. The overall blame comes to him if the targets are not met. He may even get sacked. Likewise he gets praise if the organization is meeting its target.
Question: What does it take to become a managing director?
Answer: There is no department in any higher institution that trains students to become managing director. Rather, you may have courses that have to do with management such Business administration, Personnel Management, Accountancy etc. However, the good thing about it is that whatever the course you do [be it Sciences, Social Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Medicine] you can still achieve this goal. I as an example did Agricultural Economics as first degree. What you need to do is to have a very good grade for your first degree preferably a minimum of a second-class upper.
Furthermore, you need to have some professional qualifications like ICAN, CIPM, MBA, etc. This will boost your chances of getting promoted. You also need to have good work experience, recommendation from people and of course, be hardworking. With these, you can rise from one position to the other; from for instance, Personnel Manager to a higher level until you get to the level of the Managing Director.
Question: What are the challenges in being a managing director?
Answer: There are many challenges as far as being the head of an organization is concerned;
1. Achieving the status of a person who is the head of an organization is not an easy task, therefore you have to work really hard in terms of your study as a student as well as work hard when you start working. To achieve this, you have to be disciplined. There is no room for excuses.
2. Like I have said before, he is the head of the organization therefore he may get sacked if the organization is not performing well.
3. You have to expose yourself to what is going on around you especially in the business world .
4. Study the success story of other people so that you can take good lessons from them.
5. You have to take responsibility for your own development. There is a level to which your parents can help you therefore, you have to take responsibility for the rest.
6. Finally and very importantly, you have to be prayerful as it is only Allaah that can help one achieve whatever he hopes to in life.
