1. Knowledge that is not acted upon.
The Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to pray thus:
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allaah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded." (Muslim)
2. The deed that has neither sincerity nor is based on following the righteous examples of others.
Allaah says: ''whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord." (Q18[Kahf]:110)
3. Money that is hoarded, as the owner neither enjoys it during this life nor obtains any reward for it in the Hereafter.
Allaah says:
"Seek, with that (wealth) which Allaah has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of legal enjoyment in this world, and do good as Allaah has been good to you." (Q28[Qasas]:77)
4. The heart that is empty of love and longing for Allaah, and of seeking closeness to Him
Allaah says:
"If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight.... are dearer to you than Allaah and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allaah brings about His Decision (torment). And Allah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allaah." (Q9[Tawbah]:24)
5. A body that does not obey and serve Allaah .
Allaah says:
"Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Obey Allaah and the Messenger (Muhammad SAW)." But if they turn away, then Allah does not like the disbelievers." (Q3[Aal-Imraan]:32)
6. Loving Allaah without following His orders or seeking His pleasure.
Allaah says:
"Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind): "If you (really) love Allaah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah), Allaah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Q3 [Aal- Imraan]:31)
7. Time that is not spent in expiating sins or seizing opportunities to do good.
Allaah says: "And of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: "Now I repent;"" (Q4[Nisaa]: 18)
8. Accompanying those who do not bring you close to Allah, nor benefit you in your life.
Allaah says:"O you who believe! Be afraid of Allaah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds)." (Q9[Tawbah]:119)
