Allaah has sent down the Quraan and made it perfect in all aspects. Some of its verses were revealed due to certain events while others have no occurrence backing them except as a guide to the whole of humanity Allaah says: "This is a Book which We have revealed unto you in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness into Iight ."(lbraaheem [14]: 1)
Definition: The causes of revelation called Asbaab- un-Nuzool in Arabic, is defined to be the event or occurrence that was the direct cause of revelation of a particular verse or chapter of the Quraan .. In other words, the verse or verses must have been revealed in response to the occurrence, and it is usually an answer or ruling pertaining to that incident. In this edition, we bring to you the reason behind the revelation of a verse in Suratul - Maryam as related by one of the foremost companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessing be upon him) named AI-Khabaab (RA).
His narration: AI-Khabaab (RA) related that: "I was a blacksmith in Makkah. Once I made a sword for AI- Asi bin Wail As-Sahmi (one of the unbelievers at that time) and he owed me a debt. When I went to demand its price, he said, "I will not give it to you till you disbelieve in Muhammad!" I said, "I shall not disbelieve in Muhammad till Allaah make you die and then bring you to life again." He said, "Will I be resurrected after my death? "If Allaah should make me die and then resurrect me and I would have wealth and children," If so, shall pay you (there) if I should find wealth and children," So there was revealed: "Have you seen him who disbelieved in our signs and revelations (this Quraan and Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him)) and yet says: "I shall certainly be given wealth and children [if I will be alive(again)]," Has he known the unseen or has he taken a covenant from the Most Gracious (Allaah)? Nay! We shall record what he says, and We shall increase his torment (in the Hell); And We shall inherit from him (at his death) all that he talks of (i.e, wealth and children which We have bestowed upon him in this world), and he shall come to Us alone." (Maryam [19]: 77 - 80)
