Imam Al-Bukhari relates that, Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) said: "the cleavage of the moon occurred during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) said: "Allaah says: "the hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (Q54: 1)." The people of Makkah requested the Prophet (peace be upon him) to show them a miracle so he showed them the splitting of the moon. The moon was split into two in the sky.
One piece went behind Mountain Hira and the other one went to its other side, leaving the mountain in between, while the people of Makkah were watching. Most of the people thought it was magic. So when those who were travelling reached Makkah, they were asked about the moon, and they narrated that they saw it split into two. From then on. it became clear to the people of Makkah that the cleavage of the moon was genuine, real and true.
