Having faith in Allaah far outweighs any form of worldly possessions that one can have in this life or any form of beauty or handsomeness there is for that person. Taken from the opposite direction, a believer with bodily defects or form of handicap is better in the sight of Allaah, even if the people might not give him his due regards and acknowledgements at times. This was the case with a blind companion of the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) named Abdullah bin Umm Makhtum (RA) concerning whom Allaah revealed a whole surah of the Qur'aan.
Aaisha (RA) the wife of Allaah's Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him) related that: "He frowned and turned away, because there came to him the blind man... " It was sent down concerning Abdullah bin Umm Makhtum; (RA) the blind companion. He came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessing be upon him) (seeking to accept Islaam) and began to say: "Oh Muhammad! I wish you would come nearer to me (since he was blind). Meanwhile, in the presence of Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) was a man (named as Ubay bin Khalaf or Utbah bin Rabi'ah and Abu Jahl bin Hishaam or AI - Abbaas bin Abdul Muttalib (RA) or Umayyah bin Khalaf) from the nobles of the polytheist of Makkah (and they were in a conversation during which the Prophet [peace and blessing be upon him] wanted to win him over as a believer).
(But due to this interruption) the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) began to turn away from Abdullah bin Umm Makhtum (RA) to the other person while saying: "0 Abu so and so! Do you find any fault In what I have said so far? The other man said: "No! By the blood! I cannot find a fault with what you have said! So "He frowned and turned away, because there came to him the blind man ..." was revealed. The revelation of this suraah is a further confirmation of the truthfulness of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) and the fact that the message was from his Lord and not him. If the Prophet was not truthful, he would have kept this portion that criticized him away from the Qur'aan. Thus it used to be said that: "Were the Messenger of Allaah to conceal any inspiration from Allaah, he (peace and blessing be upon him) would hidden this one about himself."
