Whatever the cause of your sadness know that ...
1. Everything that is decreed for the Muslim is best for him. Allaah says: "It may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know." (Q2 [Baqarah]:216)
2. There are many other blessings of" Allaah on you, recollect them and be thankful. Allaah says: "Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me." (Q2[Baqarah]: 152)
3. Whatever you have are better than countless others that you do not have. The Messenger of Allaah (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Wealth is not determined by much of money. rather wealth is contentment of the heart," (Muslim)
4. Indeed with every difficulty there is relief. Allaah says: "Soverily, with the hardship, there is relief, Verily, with the hardship, there is relief (i.e. there is one hardship with two reliefs, so one hardship cannot overcome two reliefs)." (Q94[lnshirah]:5-6)
5. In times of hardships, your refuge is in your prayer and supplications. Allaah says: "And seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy and hare1 except for Al-Khashiun [i.e. the true believers in Allah those who obey Allah with full submission, ffear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise, etc.) and in His Warnings (Hell, etc.)]." (Q2[Baqarah]:45)
